After reading Bill McEwen's Nov. 14 column, it struck me that he may be confused about what "New Urbanism" is and what it is not.
New Urbanism is not Harlan Ranch, a sprawling subdivision on the north edge of town. That is only a pseudo-urban lifestyle, where walking to work or school is about as realistic as swimming to Hawaii.
New Urbanism is Reza Assemi's Vagabond Lofts, which feature retail storefronts on the ground floor and living space up above. Mr. Assemi has created a mixed-use development that encourages Fresnans to move downtown and stay there. This idea seems to be a better example of "smart, healthy planning" than 60 acres of suburban sprawl.
