Recovering from the “mother of all colds” allowed time to reflect upon illness; the great equalizer. No matter one’s political party, sex, religion or social status; suffering is indiscriminate and universal. The redemptive value, however, is a sober refection on our shared vulnerability and humanity.
Perhaps what our world needs now is a collective “mother of all colds” to appreciate and honor all those in need of compassion, solidarity and brotherhood.
In the words of the poet Robert Bly: “Where a man’s wound is, that is where his genius will be.”
