Fresno City Council Member Garry Bredefeld’s public rant against NFL players leaves me angry. The City Council discussed it again Tuesday. How has this become, in Bredefeld’s inflamed mind, a city issue? Do his“patriotic” strutting and diatribes against football players fill a single pothole or address city fiscal challenges?
No. This smells like a cheap political stunt. Bredefeld may be playing for higher office by wrapping himself in the flag.
I’m with Samuel Johnson., who said in 1775 that “patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.”
Many patriotic expressions are admirable, even stirring. Mr. Johnson meant that a scoundrel may turn to loud, showy displays of “patriotism” when he seeks suckers' votes.
Bredefeld obviously has little compassion for NFL football players’ dismay over the ongoing, endless killing of innocent black Americans by law enforcement in scattered, individual executions from sea to shining sea. This lethal contagion prompted black NFL players to “take a knee” in heartfelt, respectful protest.
Bredefeld has yet to show up at a City Council session wearing a red, white and blue Uncle Sam outfit. Don’t be surprised.
