Fresno Unified school board president Brooke Ashjian should resign immediately. If left up to him, most students would not learn about sex education or abortion, and LGBT students would be stigmatized. Believing it is wrong to encourage LGBT kids, he implies that teaching Judeo-Christian philosophies, in a district as diverse as Fresno Unified, should predominate and resolve this issue.
Ashjian’s job is to work for all students, not just those he deems worthy because they have the same “morality“ as he, the same system of “right and wrong,” or the same Judeo-Christian tradition. He rejects sex education and frames it as a morality issue, ignoring hard facts that sex ed benefits kids and prevents unwanted pregnancies.
His statements about rape, abortion and LGBT students are mancentric, presumptuous and ignorant. Abortion is lawful, LGBT students are not “just swayed to go that way,” and focusing on “later in life repercussions” from an abortion caused by rape, instead of the violence of the rape itself, blames the victim.
If Ashjian cannot wholeheartedly support all of our students, then he has no business in being on our school board.
