The front-page article in the May 28 Bee about Maria Barrera being ordered by ICE to go back to Mexico after nearly 30 years living here, was disturbing to read.
I remember clearly that when Donald Trump was campaigning he said that his goal was not to deport most of the illegal immigrants but just the “bad hombres.”
Maria Barrera does not fit that description. In fact, stories like Maria’s are happening all over the country, sending people to Mexico who have made their lives here, worked hard, paid taxes and raised families. The fact that there is no path to citizenship for illegal immigrants and that most entered the country after NAFTA passed, which destroyed their livelihoods in Mexico, is instructive.
It was obvious from day one that Trump was a loose cannon who would say almost anything with his statements either being lies or things he believed which were false – neither option making me feel secure as a citizen of this country.
The most disturbing thing is how the Republicans are going along with his agenda, no matter how radical and destructive it is. That should be foremost in everyone’s thoughts for the 2018 congressional election.
