I am saddened that Fresno City Council unanimously voted to place the motto “In God We Trust” at City Hall.
As a third-generation Japanese American who is Buddhist, whose father fought with the decorated 442 Regimental Combat unit, 100th Battalion in World War II, amid his family’s incarceration at Gila River internment camp, my moral compass is not based on this motto. I was raised to respect all things and to appreciate this great country.
None of the council members could bring themselves to relate to those opposed to this idea and that will not unite us. Placing a motto on a wall will not instill morals where none exist. Like generations before me, those values need to be shared and taught. We need to do a better job.
