As a proud former Fresno State Bulldog, I want to commend The Fresno Bee for its compassionate news coverage of the horrific murders that have devastated four families and the entire community of Fresno. I’m always grateful as a longtime victim advocate when the news media focus on the devastating impact of homicide and the individuals whose lives were tragically cut short.
My pride extends personally to you and Congressman Jim Costa, co-chair of the Congressional Victims’ Rights Caucus. In the April 20 edition of The Bee, both of you advised the people of Fresno to focus on the victims and their families – a focus that is too often misdirected to violent offenders. We’ve all seen that focus in the past days in the stellar efforts of Police Chief Jerry Dyer, Costa, the FBI and their staffs to identify and meet the needs of the victims.
This is advice that, when taken to heart, can provide help, hope and healing to the surviving families of Carl Williams III, Zackary David Randalls, Mark James Gassett and David Martin Jackson, as well as to the community of Fresno.
