I recently read the article, “Trump’s proposed budget cuts may hurt Fresno’s poor, first generation students” (March 19). I am a first-generation college student and found the article to really hit home. I am a full-time student at Fresno State. I am one of the thousands of students mentioned who benefit from these federal programs. Perhaps without the help of these programs, I would not be where I am today.
According to Charles Derber, the author of “The Wilding in America: Money, Mayhem, and the American Dream,” “the Dream brought Americans together, for as long as the pie was growing, everyone could win.” This being said, these proposed budget cuts would “keep the pie from growing” and ultimately put certain individuals at a larger disadvantage than others.
Just because we are first-generation, low-income students, shouldn’t deprive us from our right to pursue higher education, let alone deprive us from our right to succeed and be the best that we can be. There needs to be others who address these issues that others won’t. I want to thank you this article and making our voices heard.
