The genius of Obamacare was the Republican origin of its principles. The individual mandate is the only way to create a large enough pool for private companies to provide affordable care. Especially if they cannot deny coverage for preexisting conditions.
Doctors, clinics and hospitals are paid for the services they provide. This relieves them of the burden of passing those costs on from those who can’t pay to those who can – further lowering costs for everyone. How’s that for a Republican idea? Pure genius!
Of course the poor have to be subsidized either through Medicaid or assistance with premiums. And of course we could just let people die in the streets.
The fact is that the Affordable Care Act has achieved what it set out to do: provide affordable health care and slow the meteoric rise in costs. Now after the creation of a national health care system, the insurance and pharmaceutical companies are jacking up drug prices and premiums, and pulling out of the markets they don’t like.
Much more needs to be done to improve what we have only just begun with a couple of Republican ideas.
