After reading the article titled “Helping them heal,” (Oct. 30) in which the Syrian refugee said, “Thank you, American,” at school, hugged her and she cried, it helped me really understand what these Syrian refugee children are going through.
Many many people often forget that these children do not completely understand what is going on, and are just trying to assimilate into American culture. It was nice reading about how schools are dealing with this situation and seeing school officials trying their best to make these children feel safe.
Many people tend to dehumanize these refugees and forget about how many innocent children are being affected. Some forget that, if it were up to the refugees they would not be here but their circumstances have made them come to the United States.
I enjoyed that your article really shed some light on the current situation, and how difficult it has been for the refugees. Your article really showed how appreciative the refugees are to be able to live here in America away from the war. As a community, we should come together to help those in need.
Never miss a local story.
