We live in a world that has enough judgment and hate already. Yet, when we are faced head-on with issues like the Orlando, Florida, shooting and given a chance to respond with compassion and a new perspective on how we should go about living in our world, we fail to acknowledge the call to action.
The mentalities of the past seem to continue presenting themselves and hindering progress in our world through the influence of parents’ discomfort with various gender identities and resistance to new outlooks that have been altered from the “traditional ways of the world” in modern-day society, for example, transgender adults and children.
We have continued to spread biased and closed-minded perspectives on what it is to identify with something you were not inherently “created” to associate with or relate to. The two mothers in Clovis Unified School District have brought attention to the facts of parental influence on children.
Children are raised and educated with the morality, values and beliefs similar to what they observe in their parents. This “anxiety” they feel by changing next to a transgender student most likely exists due the beliefs of their parents rather than their own formed opinion or discomfort.
