Thumbs up to Darden Architects of Fresno and Fresno Unified School District voters. Darden Architects designed Edison High School's new 42,647-square-foot main building that helped earn Edison a spot on a ranking of the world's most impressive high school campuses. The building was made possible by the $280 million Measure Q school bond passed in 2010.
Thumbs down to Kings County farmer John Tos, who on Tuesday compared the California High-Speed Rail Authority's plans in the Valley to Nazi atrocities during World War II. We recognize that the bullet-train project has fanned emotions, particularly among those who may have to sell their land or relocate businesses. Tos' over-the-top comment, however, was an extreme exaggeration, an insult to the authority and clouded legitimate issues faced by farmers and other business owners. We hope that Tos' public apology to the authority's board of directors was sincere.
Thumbs up to Lali Moheno of Visalia, recipient of a 2013 California Peace Prize from the California Wellness Foundation. In announcing the award, the foundation cited Moheno's dedication "to improving the health and wellness of female farmworkers in Tulare County who are often victims of sexual harassment and other forms of violence." Moheno said that she plans to use the $25,000 that comes with the honor to help her new nonprofit, the United Women's Organization. She previously founded Latinas in Business and Professions.
