Kyrie Carter of Fresno, born with five thumbs, is among many infants who have had plastic surgery at Valley Children’s Hospital. Hand, facial and skull reconstructions are among the plastic surgeries performed at the Madera County hospital in Central California to help children live more functional lives.

Big money for Kids Day: Tally hits $605,000, and more to come

All those pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar bills donated Tuesday in the Kids Day fundraiser to benefit Valley Children’s Hospital are adding up to big bucks: As of Thursday afternoon, the tally stood at $605,000, and there’s more cash yet to count, hospital spokeswoman Zara Arboleda said.

Advancements in surgery techniques and technology in the last three decades have dramatically decreased potential health problems for patients who now benefit from less invasive surgery. New methods make reduce recovery time, often from days to hours.
