The Fresno Bee begins a month-long project examining the life and legacy of author William Saroyan, born 100 years ago this year.
In print and at fresnobee.com, we will present "Follow," a never-published novella Saroyan wrote when he was about 22. In 13 chapters that take the protagonist from Fresno in the 1920s to New York City, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a young writer on the brink of greatness.
We also will present stories about Saroyan's later years, about his future as a literary figure and about the Fresno of Saroyan's youth.
We'll also be writing about the Valley's Armenian-American community, of which Saroyan is perhaps the best known member.
Return to this page on May 4 to see all the stories and additional online features, including an interactive timeline and dozens of historic photographs from the collections of the Pop Laval Foundation and Fresno County Library.
For a preview of the project, listen to a podcast with Bee staff writers Guy Keeler, Don Mayhew and managing editor Jack Robinson.
