Fresno City Council Member Steve Brandau said Thursday he will not vote on Feb. 5 if the $429 million water project and rates issue comes to before the council.
Brandau supports improving water infrastructure and securing a reliable supply for the 21st century. But he called the proposed rate hikes a burden.
The new $7.5 billion state water bond is pivotal to his agenda, Brandau said. Some of that money could be used in Fresno to offset the price of water system improvements.
Brandau called for a water summit with top Valley-based state lawmakers to explore funding options prior to a council vote on project.
Mayor Ashley Swearengin has been pushing for water-system improvements she says are necessary to ensure a supply of fresh water into the future.
