Lisa Smittcamp will be sworn in as Fresno County’s new district attorney in a public ceremony Monday.
The event will take place at 4:30 p.m. at the Fresno County Plaza Ballroom, 2220 Tulare St. in downtown Fresno.
Smittcamp was elected to the office last June when she defeated Elizabeth Egan. Smittcamp is a former deputy district attorney who began working in Fresno County in 2001.
Another top law officer to be sworn in is Jay Varney, who takes over as Madera County sheriff. The change of command ceremony will be conducted Tuesday by Varney and outgoing Sheriff John Anderson.
Never miss a local story.
The ceremony will be held at 12:15 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office headquarters, 14143 Road 28 in Madera. A reception will follow.
Varney said it will be an honor to share the day with Anderson, who is retiring after 16 years of service.
Varney assumes the helm after more than 30 years in law enforcement. Before becoming Chowchilla’s police chief in 2004, Varney attained the rank of sergeant at the Dallas Police Department and lieutenant at the Lansing Police Department in Michigan.
