Griswold: Woman still seeks photos of Valley's Vietnam War dead

A mission to collect photographs of those killed in the Vietnam War continues.

Janna Hoehn of Maui, Hawaii, made it her personal duty to help collect photographs of every American who died in the Vietnam War, especially those from Hawaii and California.

The pictures are for inclusion in the "Wall of Faces," a digital companion to the Vietnam War Memorial -- "The Wall" -- in Washington, D.C., where the names of all who died are carved in stone.

In January, The Fresno Bee published the names of the fallen from Fresno, Kings, Tulare and Madera counties whose photos had not yet been found.

Since the article ran, Hoehn has collected 89 additional photos, bringing the number she's collected from California to about 700.

Some were emailed to her and some she found on her own. For instance, she called Hanford High and got seven yearbook photos, completing her Kings County photo list.

"It's an amazing cause," she said. "People are elated when they find out someone wants a picture of their loved one."

She still needs 79 more from Valley counties: two from Madera, 50 from Fresno, 15 from Tulare and 12 from Merced.

Photos can be sent to neverforgotten2014@gmail.com.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which operates the Wall of Faces, appreciates her dedication and invited her to speak Monday at the Memorial Day service at The Wall.

OLD WELLS: Property owners within the boundaries of the Kaweah Delta Water Conservation District in Tulare County who have an unused or abandoned well can apply to have it capped for free.

Unused wells can be a safety hazard if a person or animal falls in, and contaminants can drip down to groundwater.

A county ordinance requires that unused wells be capped.

The area of the program includes Visalia, Goshen, West Goshen, Tulare, Waukena, Farmersville, Woodlake, Ivanhoe, Elderwood, Lemoncove, Lindcove, Yokohl Valley, Exeter, Tooleville, Tonyville, Lindsay, Plainview and Strathmore.

Self-Help Enterprises is running the program, funded by a grant from the state Department of Water Resources. Information: Self-Help staff member Shauna Dolin at (559) 802-1647.

SCICON: Dianne Shew has been named to succeed Rick Mitchell as administrator of the SCICON outdoor education program, operated by the Tulare County Office of Education.

SCICON is a science and nature conservation camp in the mountains of Tulare County near Springville. About 15,000 students, especially fifth and sixth graders, visit SCICON every year.

Shew has been at SCICON for 13 years, starting as forestry specialist.

She expanded the nursery program, reaching out to the community and supporting Arbor Day by providing tree seedlings for students who attend SCICON.

More recently, she oversaw the naturalists, interns and specialists.

Mitchell, the SCICON administrator since 1990, will retire June 30.
