A powerful earthquake jolted central Mexico on Tuesday, causing buildings to sway in the capital on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that did major damage. The strong quake was captured on video as the Associated Press staff worked in their Mexico City office.
The annual Fiestas Patrias was held Sunday to celebrate Mexico and other Latin American countries' independences. Due to construction downtown the event was held at Manchester Center, but plans are to return to downtown next year.
Two people were stranded after their boat overturned off Montana de Oro. After being alerted by someone on shore, the U.S. Coast Guard, Morro Bay Harbor Patrol and Cal Fire were able to rescue the two from their submerged vessel on Monday, September 18, 2017.
Hurricane Maria has regained Category 5 strength overnight into Tuesday. Officials in the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe said the French island near Dominica probably would experience heavy flooding and warned that many communities could be submerged. The storm was located early Tuesday about 65 miles west-southwest of Guadeloupe.
The forecast from the National Weather Service in Hanford shows temperatures dropping to the mid-70s this week in Fresno and other parts of the Valley. However, the heat is expected to be back next week.
