When fire hydrants in Fowler needed a fresh coat of paint, Trevor Amarante was one of the first to volunteer for the job. Trevor is used to getting his hands dirty: he also fixes up neighbors' homes through a church group and recently planted flowers around Fowler's veterans memorial.
"I just like to work around the community and know that I'm able to help improve the community around me," he said.
Trevor has a true giving spirit, said his mom, Lynde Amarante, a trait that shows up as often at school as it does when he volunteers.
"He's always asking if (his teachers) need help," she said. "He never says no, he's always very positive."
Trevor is at the top of his class at John Sutter Middle School, where he plays soccer, baseball and football and performs in the marching band. He's working toward becoming an Eagle Scout and is a member of both the Science Bowl and Science Olympiad teams.
Stephanie Salas, his teacher and Science Olympiad coach, said he has a laser focus when it comes to school. If his grade ever falls below 110%, "he's already asking for extra credit" opportunities, she said.
Getting up early before school to work on homework helps him squeeze in all the extra work, Trevor said.
"I was inspired by my parents and it's a drive that I have," he added.
