Instead they have been left to languish in “special day classes,” where they’ve been greeted by low expectations from teachers and administrators. But efforts are underway to change all that. This edition of Eye on Education examines special education in the San Joaquin Valley — the struggles facing parents, the challenges of providing services to far-flung rural students and efforts underway at schools and districts to better serve these children.
