Virginia R. Boris Elementary School opened its doors for the first time Monday when students in the Clovis Unified School District started the new year.
Clovis Unified was the final district in the central San Joaquin Valley to go back to school. Fresno Unified began a week ago, and some districts’ students returned as early as two weeks ago.
Virginia R. Boris Elementary is the district’s 51st campus and the only one named for a female educator. It is located at Temperance and Clinton avenues.
The name was selected at the recommendation of a committee of parents and school employees.
Never miss a local story.
“Ginny” Boris was a Clovis Unified math teacher, principal and associate superintendent from 1971 to her retirement in 2008. She was inducted into the Clovis Hall of Fame in 2010.
“I am humbled, overwhelmed and honored because I love this district,” Boris said in 2015 when the decision to name the school after her was reached. “I cannot think of a higher honor that you could bestow upon me than by putting my name on a place that is devoted to learning and teaching.”
