Fresno State will host a celebration of life event on March 12 to honor alumnus and farmer Ronald Metzler.
The event is open to the public and will be held at 2 p.m. at the Henry Metzler Gazebo, which is named for Mr. Metzler’s father.
Mr. Metzler graduated from Fresno State in 1959 and was a track and field athlete. He passed away on Nov. 24 at the age 78 after a a battle Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as ALS. He was diagnosed with the disease in 2014.
Through SunMet brand and Metzler Family Farms, he developed production techniques for table and wine grapes, almonds and walnuts. He also served as executive director for Central California Winegrape Growers, was a founding member for the California Association of Winegrape Growers.

The farmer was a longtime supporter of Fresno State and served as president of the Bulldog Foundation and as a trustee. He was honored with the foundations Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
Those attending are asked to wear Bulldog red, and speakers will include family and friends.
