Seventy-eight students, in elementary and junior high divisions, from 21 school districts demonstrated their spelling expertise at the 21st Annual Fresno County Spell-Off competition at the Fresno Convention Center, Exhibit Hall, Thursday morning.
The top two elementary students will represent Fresno County in the State Elementary Competition on April 18 at the San Joaquin County Office of Education in Stockton.
The top two junior high students will advance to the State Junior High Competition on May 2 at Miller Creek School in San Rafael.
The elementary division was an oral competition and the junior division, a written competition.

In the elementary competition, the winning word was “battalion”. The winners were: First place: Ananya Vinay, fourth grade, Fugman Elementary, Clovis Unified; Second place: Gianni Manfredi, sixth grade, John S. Walsh Elementary, Sanger Unified; third place (alternate to State Competition): Max Sandoval, sixth grade, Liberty Elementary, Kerman Unified.
In the junior high school competition, the winning word was “potpourri”. The winners were: First place: Leah Whitehouse, eighth grade, Edison Computech, Fresno Unified (her second consecutive win); second place: Seth Freitas, eighth grade, St. Anthony’s School, Diocese of Fresno; third place (alternate to State Competition): Willem Kuenen, seventh grade, Clay Elementary, Clay Joint Elementary School District.
