Three central San Joaquin Valley chess teams took home second-place prizes at the U.S. Junior Chess Congress in Santa Clara over the weekend.
Coalinga’s team, which has won the title three of the past four years, earned a second-place finish this year in the 20 years old and under category, team coach Ed Wong said. Mendota finished second in the 18 and under category while Washington Union took the second place prize in the 16 and under category.
Three of Wong’s four sons — 15-year-old Blake Wong, 14-year-old Brett Wong and 12-year-old Bryce Wong — took home individual trophies, he said.
Coalinga has a long history of chess success and has won the state tournament 15 times. The team competes in several national tournaments each year, Wong said.
