Valley students awarded Table Grape Commission scholarships

Five central San Joaquin Valley high school graduates received scholarships from the California Table Grape Commission.

Four students each received a $20,000 four-year agriculture scholarship: John Taylor Ball, a Clovis West graduate headed to California State University, Fresno; Adilene Gonzalez, a Hanford High graduate also headed to Fresno State; Julia Reese, a Clovis North graduate headed to University of California at Davis; and Cristiano Alves, a Kingsburg High graduate headed to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Maria Lozano, a Reedley High graduate, received a $3,500 two-year field worker scholarship. She plans to attend Heald College.

Four other students from California also received scholarships, including two from McFarland: Diana Valenzuela (headed to University of Southern California) and Lissette Garcia (UCLA) each received $20,000 scholarships.

Five of the scholarships went to children of table grape field workers.

More than 100 scholarships have been awarded to field workers and their children from the table grape-growing regions of California in the program's 30-year history. Recently, scholarships were added for students who plan to pursue careers in agriculture.

Applications for 2015 scholarships will be available this fall at www.grapesfromcalifornia.com.
