A Fresno man is in custody on charges of auto theft and hit and run after a rampage Wednesday afternoon at his former girlfriend’s house in northeast Fresno, police reported.
The incident took place shortly after noon at Fresno Street north of Escalon Avenue when suspect Joshua Jo Wilkins, 31, went to retrieve some of his belongings at the woman’s home, according to Lt. Joe Gomez.
Things went amicably until the man went outside for a cigarette break. Then, according to police, Wilkins jumped in the woman’s Toyota 4-Runner, rammed a garage door and a parked car and drove the wrong way south on Fresno Street. He nearly collided with oncoming traffic before veering into a tree. He then jumped from the SUV and ran south on Fresno before he was apprehended. He was treated at the scene for an injured arm.
Gomez said Wilkins was under the influence of alcoholic beverages and was arrested on charges of DUI, driving on a suspended license, hit and run, felony vandalism and auto theft. He will be booked at the Fresno County Jail.
