A man wanted in an April shooting that killed a woman and wounded her boyfriend was arrested June 28 at a central Fresno apartment, police said Wednesday.
Abel Echartea, 27, was arrested at an apartment in the 300 block of West Dudley Avenue when police and the U.S. Marshals breached the door after the occupants failed to respond to law enforcement calls to come outside.
During a search, police found 11 weapons – 10 handguns and one .223 assault rifle – and a large amount of narcotics, police said. Echartea was booked into the Fresno County Jail on suspicion of homicide as well as weapons and narcotics charges.
He was wanted in the April 9 shooting that killed a woman, who was identified shortly after the slaying as Angelita Mendez, 22. Police on Wednesday said her last name was Martinez.
Mendez was a front-seat passenger in a Chrysler 300 that was traveling north on Abby Street, north of Belmont Avenue, when a light-colored sedan pulled up next to the car and someone inside shot repeatedly at the Chrysler.
Her wounded boyfriend drove away and flagged down a driver near Nielsen and Marks avenues. Two children in the backseat were not hit.
