A 19-year-old man was shot Tuesday night west of Highway 99 after a group of men approached the car he was in as he and three friends were smoking marijuana, Fresno police said.
The shooting happened around 8:15 p.m. in the area of Buckingham Way and Cornelia Avenue, just south of Ashlan Avenue, Lt. Dave Ramos said. Officers found the man suffering from a single, non-lethal gunshot wound to his upper body.
The victim said he was in a car with three friends smoking marijuana while they were parked on Buckingham Way, Ramos said. A group of men that they knew approached the car and started talking to them.
The conversation turned into an altercation and one person fired a gun, Ramos said.
The victim was taken by his friends to Clovis Community Medical Center, where he was reported in stable condition. Detectives were at the hospital Tuesday night talking to the victim and the other vehicle occupants.
The cause of the shooting is under investigation, Ramos said. The shooting didn't appear to be gang-related.
