A 9-year-old boy was run over while pushing his younger brother out of the way of an oncoming SUV on Jan. 22 in a southwest Fresno intersection.
Fresno police Sgt. Mark Hudson said the white SUV was traveling east on California Avenue when it hit Deshaun Mitchell around 6:30 p.m. in the crosswalk of Pottle Avenue. The driver failed to stop after the collision, and police are asking for help in identifying this hit-and-run suspect.
Hudson said Deshaun’s younger brother entered the crosswalk first. When Deshaun saw the oncoming vehicle, he jumped into the crosswalk to help his brother.
Deshaun was released Tuesday from Valley Children’s Hospital, where he was treated for a broken leg, bruised lungs and swollen left temple.
Never miss a local story.
Police learned Tuesday that a small white sedan was driving in front of the SUV just before the accident. The car avoided the children.
Detectives also learned the SUV was a newer model white Chevy Tahoe.
