Two people were shot, one dead, in separate incidents Friday evening in Fresno, police say.
Lt. Mindy Casto said a 30-year-old man died at Community Regional Medical Center soon after he was shot on Calaveras Street near McKenzie Avenue in the Lowell neighborhood of downtown. The shooting happened about 6:30 p.m. after an exchange of words between the dead man and others along a sidewalk.
Casto said it might be gang-related; officers were pursuing leads and searching a nearby apartment complex for witnesses and possible suspects.
Casto said officers were able to respond quickly because of the ShotSpotter technology that allows monitors to distinguish the sound of gunshots at a central command center in police headquarters. Investigation on scene confirmed what ShotSpotter had distinguished: two shots fired.

The second shooting was reported about 7:15 p.m. near Edison High School in west Fresno.
Casto said the male victim was outside his friend’s house near California and Klette avenues when he was shot in the leg. The victim’s injuries were not life-threatening.
That shooting does not appear to be gang-related, Casto said. No other details were immediately available.
Anyone with information on the shootings is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 559-498-STOP.
