One man is dead and two others sustained critical injuries after a vehicle rolled as its driver tried to escape police late Friday night in southeast Fresno.
Fresno police Sgt. Dave Gibeault said the accident happened shortly before 11 p.m. on South Golden State Boulevard near South Railroad Avenue.
Officers patrolling the area tried to pull over a vehicle after noticing traffic violations. The driver of the vehicle pulled over on South Railroad Avenue, then sped off at more than 50 mph toward Golden State Boulevard, Gibeault said.
The vehicle swerved at the intersection at Golden State and Railroad at high speeds, tumbling on its side on the right shoulder of southbound Golden State Boulevard.
A man who was a passenger in the vehicle died at the scene. The driver, a man whose identity was not released, and a female passenger sustained “pretty serious” injuries and were transported to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, Gibeault said.
The Fresno Fire Department helped rescue the victims. Debris was scattered throughout the north and southbound lanes of the road.
Police are investigating whether alcohol played a role in the accident. No other victims or vehicles were involved.
