A man was shot in the leg Thursday during a six-person brawl near a central Fresno elementary school, police said.
Lt. Joe Gomez said officers responded to a 911 call of shots fired just after 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Grant Avenue and Thesta Street north of Yokomi Elementary School. They did not find anyone, but witnesses said two groups of three Hispanic men were fighting in the area.
Lt. Mike Doyle said that children were playing a baseball game when the shot rang out. They were ushered into a classroom by a science teacher and led out of the school through a southern exit. None were hurt.
Gomez said that an 18-year-old man arrived at Community Regional Medical Center soon after the 911 call with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was not cooperative with police and denied being involved in a fight, Gomez said.
Never miss a local story.
The injured man told police he had been walking south on Grant when an unknown truck pulled up next to him and shot him, he said.
Gomez said the man showed signs of having been in a fight.
Detectives received tips identifying the men involved as Bulldog gang members. No witnesses saw the shooting, and no shell casings or bullet strikes were found at the scene, Gomez said.
