The Fresno Fire Department arrested a woman who they say started a large vegetation fire that threatened an occupied residence Tuesday in downtown Fresno.
Fresno Fire spokesman Pete Martinez said the fire began around 4 p.m. on the southwest corner of Ventura and F streets. Firefighters found a 15-foot by 18-foot area of vegetation on fire in a vacant lot and moving toward a home. They contained the blaze to the lot.
Witnesses told investigators that Nyree Bernard was burning paper and personal belongings near the fire, Martinez said. A Fresno Fire investigator determined the fire was intentional and arrested Bernard on suspicion of willfully and maliciously setting fire to the vegetation property of the Poverello House.
