A man was arrested Monday after allegedly using a knife to rob El Montana Sports Bar at 3368 W. Mt. Whitney Ave. in Riverdale, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said.
Jose Efren Ramirez, 29, of Riverdale, was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery. Ramirez allegedly entered the bar shortly after midnight to ask for a lighter. He walked outside only to reenter the bar a few seconds later, jump over the bar counter, and demand that the bartender open the cash register. Ramirez was allegedly armed with a knife with a 3- or 4-inch blade. When the bartender was unable to open the register, Ramirez allegedly forced it open himself and fled with an undisclosed amount of money.
Witnesses identified Ramirez as a possible suspect, deputies said. Ramirez was arrested shortly before 2 a.m. at an apartment complex on the 21400 block of South Marks Avenue in Riverdale. After receiving a search warrant, detectives found several stacks of cash on a table inside the apartment.
