Jonathon Urias, a band teacher at Tipton Elementary School, and Matthew Varpness, an Exeter High teacher, are set to appear in preliminary hearings for separate allegations of sex crimes against children, county district attorney Tim Ward announced Friday.
Urias, 27, was charged with sexual molestation of a minor as well as two child pornography-related charges on March 16 and was placed on administrative leave soon after. He is due in Tulare County Superior Court on March 30.
Varpeness, 36, was arrested March 13 and charged with 15 felonies — including meeting with a minor for lewd purposes — after he allegedly molested an underage high school girl at his Visalia home last year. Varpness, also suspected of sending sexually explicit text messages to the victim and another underage girl, is due in court April 6.
Both suspects will be prosecuted by two deputy district attorneys in the DA’s Crimes Against Children Division.
