Lincoln Elementary School in southwest Fresno was locked down Wednesday morning after two gang members fleeing gunfire ran onto the campus, police say.
The incident took place near Ventura and B streets about 11 a.m. Police Lt. Joe Gomez said officers responding to reports of gunfire in the area sped to the campus, where they found two male teenagers hiding in a school building. At the same time, other officers detained four teens sitting on a curb at nearby Inyo Street and B. Gomez said officers determined that one of the four, a 17-year-old, was the gunman.
The two victims told officers that they were walking near Inyo and B when they were confronted by the four. Gomez said the victims are gang rivals of the four. A week ago, the two groups were involved in a fistfight.
After the gunman opened fire Wednesday, the victims, neither of whom were struck, ran south on B Street to the school and took refuge. The 17-year-old was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon. Investigators are using a police dog and metal detectors to search for the firearm and evidence.
