Fresno firefighters battled a fire Saturday morning that spread in minutes from dense brush in a front yard to the porch of a century-old downtown Fresno home.
Capt. Christian Palmer said the blaze was set intentionally and several neighbors told firefighters they saw a couple of people running from the scene at the corner of Poplar and Voorman avenues. The home was furnished and an owner was listed, but it does not appear to be occupied. No one was hurt.
Palmer said that firefighters arrived within minutes of the 911 call and contained the fire to the home’s porch. The house’s age, the dry conditions and the uncleared yard all contributed to a very fast-moving fire, he added.
The fire is under investigation.
The unseasonably warm, dry conditions make fire a serious hazard, said Palmer, which is why it’s important to keep homes and yards clear of debris.
