A 21-year-old woman was arrested Friday afternoon after police found an illegal assault weapon in a central Fresno apartment.
Sgt. Brian Phillips said police arrived at the apartment in the area of McKinley and Brooks avenues around 3 p.m. looking for another person wanted on a felony arrest warrant. Detectives learned that the person no longer lived at the apartment and one of its new tenants was on parole for a prior assault conviction.
Phillips said police conducted a parole compliance check and found an assault weapon, commonly referred to as a “mini 14.” Phillips said the gun is illegal in California because its collapsible, folding stock makes the length of the weapon too short. He said the weapon was also loaded with a high-capacity magazine and was unregistered.
Police arrested Elizabeth Arreola, 21, on suspicion of multiple felony weapons charges. Phillips said the person on parole was not home during the investigation and state parole agents were advised of the findings for further investigation.
