Two Fresno police officers were seriously hurt late Thursday night in a collision with an SUV while they were driving to an area where a man was aiming a laser light at a police helicopter.
A police spokesman said the officers were northbound on Blackstone Avenue and crossing Herndon Avenue about 11 a.m. when they were broadsided by a westbound Toyota 4Runner. The Toyota hit the passenger side of the patrol car, sending it into the southbound lanes of Blackstone. It took firefighters more than 20 minutes to get both officers our of the car with hydraulic equipment. The officer in the passenger seat sustained a broken femur and hip as well as back injuries and a collapsed lung and was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center. The driver sustained a concussion, broken teeth and injuries to his legs, arms and back. He was treated and released.
No other details about the crash were immediately available, and the officers were not identified.
Police arrested Johnny Quenga, 28, on San Pablo Avenue in Pinedale on charges of aiming the laser at the helicopter. Sgt. Ray Villalvazo said the laser was attached to a replica M4 rifle airsoft gun, and Quenga was monitoring police radio channels using a phone app.
