An inmate at Corcoran State Prison died Saturday from injuries he suffered three weeks earlier when his cellmate allegedly assaulted him, prison officials said.
Lt. Luis Martinez said that the 59-year-old inmate was serving a life sentence stemming from his third strike, an assault with a deadly weapon conviction in Los Angeles County. The man, whose identity was not released pending notification of his family, had been in critical condition since the attack on Feb. 9.
David Pina, 54, was identified as the suspect in the assault on his cellmate, Martinez said. He was serving a four-year sentence from a 2011 conviction for making terrorist threats in Kern County.
The prison is still investigating the incident, which will be referred to the Kings County District Attorney’s Office.
