A Fresno impound yard is looking for a Toyota Camry a woman stole using a ruse Tuesday morning west of Highway 99.
Lt. Joe Gomez said the woman went to the yard near McKinley and Hughes avenues and asked to test-drive the Camry. The salesman agreed and got in the passenger seat as the woman started the car.
Gomez said the woman had driven only a few feet when she told the salesman there seemed to be something wrong with the car. She asked him to get out and check. When he did, the woman sped away, heading east on McKinley Avenue, then north on Highway 99.
Sgt. Tim Tietjen of the Police Department’s Career Criminal Auto Theft Team said the theft appeared to be a random event and not a part of a new trend in Fresno’s longtime battle with car thieves.
Never miss a local story.
But “it doesn’t surprise me,” Tietjen said. “They’re using everything that can.”
