A 21-year-old man who relatives said was mentally ill shot and killed his 29-year-old brother in southwest Fresno on Sunday, police said.
The shooting happened inside an apartment at California and Atchinson avenues just before 11:30 a.m., Lt. Mark Salazar said. Officers performed CPR on the victim, but he died at the apartment. His identity was not released.
The younger man, identified as Jose Luis Cerna, fled after the scene, but was arrested nearly four hours later a few blocks away on West California Avenue. Police had not recovered the gun as of Sunday evening, Salazar said. Cerna had prior arrests for burglary, he said.
A family member who asked not to be named said Cerna is mentally ill and had been having more frequent episodes lately. The two brothers have always been close, she said.
“It wasn’t like they got in a fight or anything,” she said.
The family member said Cerna had used drugs before and is on medication for his illness. She didn’t know whether he was still using drugs or where he got the gun. She said he had never owned a gun before.
She said the shooting was “surreal. It’s a shock. I can’t believe this just happened.”
