A southwest Fresno gang member was arrested Sunday night on weapons charges near Shaw and Highway 99, Fresno police said.
Sgt. Paul Cerventes said the arrest took place after officers approached Tyriq Robinson, 23, who was in a car in a parking lot at Shaw and Barcus avenues about 11:15 p.m. Officers noticed the strong smell of marijuana and searched Robinson, the car and a female passenger. They recovered a loaded 9mm Glock pistol with filed-off serial numbers from the woman’s purse.
Robinson told officers the gun was to protect himself from rival gang members. Robinson also said he was under the influence of “Czurp,” which is codeine-based cough syrup mixed with a soft drink. He was booked into the Fresno County Jail; he posted bail early Monday morning.
