Fresno police arrested a teenage boy early Sunday morning for negligent discharge of a firearm after he accidentally shot himself in public.
Officers responded around 1:30 a.m. to the area of south Woodrow and east Woodward avenues about a man shooting a rifle outside a home, Sgt. Glen Shafer said. Arriving officers heard several shots fired, then established a large perimeter and took cover.
As the suspect came into officers’ view, they heard another single gunshot and the suspect fell to the ground.
Officers discovered the suspect’s ex-girlfriend was inside a nearby home with her new boyfriend. The suspect had found her vehicle parked outside and shot into the air, in an attempt to scare her.
The suspect fired around six rounds into the air from a .22 caliber rifle before the gun jammed. He accidentally shot himself in the leg while trying to clear the gun.
The teen was treated for his injury at Community Regional Medical Center and then booked into Fresno County Juvenile Hall for endangering the public by negligently firing a gun.
