A man shot in the back by a burglar is in extremely critical condition, Fresno police said Friday.
The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. Thursday night in the 1300 block of South Fourth Street in southeast Fresno. Lt. Joe Gomez said officers found the 59-year-old victim at the entrance to his home. He was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center.
The victim told officers that he was entering his home when he heard someone say “freeze.” He turned and saw a man with a small handgun trained on him. The victim lunged at the suspect and was struck several times in the face and head, causing him to fall to the floor. He tried to run out the door and was shot in the back. The victim told officers that it was possible he was followed into the home.
Officers inspecting the crime scene noticed a broken window and found that security bars had been removed from the opening. Gomez said evidence indicates that the suspect may have broken in and was burglarizing the home when the victim returned. The investigation is containing. Gomez said it is unusual for a burglar to be armed.
