A woman who targeted distressed homeowners as part of a home loan modification scam was sentenced to five years prison and ordered to pay more than $140,000 in restitution to 33 homeowners, Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp said.
Vickie Fuentes promised to modify loans for clients by reducing their interest rate. Fuentes required clients to pay an up-front fee, but did little or no work, kept mortgage payments made to her and forged documents that made homeowners believe their foreclosure sales had been canceled. Several homeowners lost their homes as a result of Fuentes’ actions, the district attorney’s office said.
Fuentes was sentenced on Friday in Fresno County Superior Court.
