A 26-year-old man with a history of violent crimes was arrested on suspicion of auto theft Tuesday when he surrendered to police after barricading himself in a downtown Fresno house for hours.
The man was seen by a witness driving a stolen truck and parking it at his house on Q Street near Merced Street, said Lt. Joe Gomez.
Officers followed the suspect in the car Tuesday when he spotted them and ran into the house around 9:30 a.m. where he took refuge for most of the day. The house is just across the Santa Fe railroad tracks from Community Regional Medical Center. It’s about two blocks north of City Hall.
Police called for a negotiator early in the day. The man has a history of armed robbery and carjacking, police said.
The man gave up and came out of the house around 3:30 p.m., Gomez said. The stolen truck was recovered.
