Clovis man allegedly punches Madera County sheriff's deputy

Two off-duty law officers and a construction worker rushed to the aid of a Madera County sheriff's deputy who was assaulted by a Clovis man Tuesday.

Madera County sheriff's spokeswoman Erica Stuart said the deputy, Steve Robinson, was trying to obtain identification from a man who was harassing customers at a truck stop when the suspect lunged at him and struck the deputy in the face. Robinson was calling for backup when the off-duty officers from Southern California and the California Department of Corrections, as well as the construction worker, jumped into help, Stuart said.

The suspect, identified as Bryan Crofts, 52, of Clovis, was booked on charges of felony battery on a peace officer.
