A Clovis man who’s accused of drugging a woman and sexually assaulting her pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Fresno County Superior Court to four felony charges, including rape of an unconscious victim and poisoning the victim.
If convicted, Donald Mayhew, 58, faces up to 12 years in prison and would have to register as a sex offender, prosecutors say.
During the brief hearing, defense attorney Marc Days told Judge Brian Alvarez that Mayhew has cooperated with police. Mayhew’s next hearing is Dec. 6.
Clovis police said Mayhew, 58, was arrested on Sept. 26 after a three-month investigation. He is free on $105,000 bail.
Mayhew, a Bullard High teacher, is on administrative leave pending the result of his criminal case, the Fresno Unified School District said.
He was a feature writer for The Fresno Bee for 27 years until leaving in 2008.
