A suspect fleeing officers while carrying drugs and a .44 Magnum was knocked off his bike by a citizen Wednesday in downtown Fresno, police reported.
Melvin Whitehurst, 28, was booked for being a felon in possession of a firearm, drug possession and resisting arrest after officers on foot caught up with him.
Sgt. Mike Gebhart said the arrest took place in the Mural District, where officers spotted Whitehurst riding a bicycle against traffic and tried to stop him. Whitehurst pedaled away. The unidentified citizen, working at a nearby business, tried to grab Whitehead, causing him to crash the bike, allowing the officers to catch up and make the arrest.
Whitehead had an outstanding narcotics warrant, a backpack with 40 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine and a loaded .44 caliber revolver stolen in Clovis more than 20 years ago.
Gebhart said police advise citizens to call police rather than try to stop a criminal, but everything worked out for the best in this case.
